Driver and Passenger Die in Cross Bronx Expressway Crash

Police described a three-vehicle crash near midnight

The Daily News reported that four people were in a gray Mitsubishi Montero Sport traveling west when the driver moved left to avoid a black Freightliner utility flatbed by the right shoulder, hit a Lincoln MKX in the center lane, and then was sent back toward the right lane, where the SUV hit the flatbed.
The Daily News reported that the flatbed operator was assisting a disabled tractor trailer. The New York Post described the Freightliner as a parked semi tow truck and said police were still investigating the cause on the day after the crash.
Two people in the Mitsubishi died, and two passengers survived
The official record identifies the people killed as the 33-year-old woman driving and a 47-year-old man in the front passenger seat. The Daily News identified the passenger as Bronx resident Stephen Williams and reported that he was trapped in the mangled SUV and died at the scene. Two back-seat passengers were hospitalized in stable condition. News reports agreed that they were a teenage girl and a 32-year-old woman, but they differed on hospital details: the Daily News reported both were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, while the Post reported that the 15-year-old girl was taken to Jacobi Hospital and the 32-year-old woman to St. Barnabas Hospital. Police told the Daily News that occupants of the other vehicles were not injured.
