At about 7:40 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2022, police said Francisco Santiago was riding west on Atlantic Avenue in Richmond Hill when he ran a red light and hit a driver in a 2016 Subaru Impreza making a left turn onto Lefferts Boulevard. The city crash record listed one person killed, no other injuries, a motorcycle and a sedan, and Driver Inexperience as a contributing factor. Police and the Daily News identified Santiago, 31, as the motorcyclist; his mother said he was coming home from an overnight sanitation shift. The Subaru driver, a 30-year-old woman, stayed at the scene and was not charged, according to press accounts.

Police described a red-light crash in Richmond Hill

The crash happened at Atlantic Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard at about 7:40 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2022. Police told reporters Santiago was riding west on Atlantic Avenue when he ran a red light and hit a driver heading north or turning left onto Lefferts Boulevard.

The official crash record lists one person killed and no other injuries. It identifies the vehicles as a motorcycle and a sedan.

Santiago was coming home from work, his mother said

Police and press accounts identified the rider as Francisco "Frankie" Santiago, 31, of Williamsburg. His mother told the Daily News he was coming home from an overnight shift for a private sanitation company, and the paper reported that he was survived by two sisters.

Authorities said Santiago was ejected, suffered multiple body trauma and was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Records and police accounts point to driver actions

The official record lists Driver Inexperience as a contributing factor for the motorcycle rider. Police also told reporters Santiago ran a red light before the collision.

The Daily News reported that the other driver was a 30-year-old woman in a 2016 Subaru Impreza making a left turn. The Post reported that she remained at the scene and that police did not suspect criminality; the Daily News reported that she had not been charged.
