Driver charged after DEP worker killed in Richmond Hill crash

A 2:33 a.m. crash at Lefferts Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue killed a DEP truck passenger, and police told the Post that Mercedes-Benz driver Errick Persaud was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI.

The official record lists one motorist killed and two motorists injured. The Post, citing police, reported that Errick Persaud was driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan and hit a Department of Environmental Protection truck carrying two sewer maintenance workers. Authorities said the passenger was ejected, pinned under the truck and later pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. The city record identifies the person killed as a 36-year-old male front passenger in the truck; the Post described the passenger as 38. Police described an early-morning impact at Atlantic Avenue

Police told the Post that two DEP sewer maintenance workers were traveling east on Atlantic Avenue in a department truck around 2:30 a.m. when Errick Persaud, driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan south on Lefferts Boulevard, hit the truck on the driver’s side.

Authorities said the impact caused the DEP truck to roll over. The passenger was ejected, pinned underneath and taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police announced manslaughter and DWI charges

Police identified the Mercedes-Benz driver as Errick Persaud, 24, and told the Post he was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI in connection with the fatal crash.

DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala said the agency was devastated after one of its workers was killed on duty and thanked both sewer maintenance workers for their service to the city.
