Police told the Daily News that the man had taken the moped while it was left running near Findlay Avenue, then traveled west on East 170th Street for about eight blocks before skidding on a damp roadway by Jerome Avenue and colliding with a dump truck. Afterward, he was thrown from the moped and ended up under a bus stopped at a light, police said. The official crash record lists unsafe speed and records one additional motorist injury. The bus driver and dump-truck driver stayed at the scene, and police said no charges were immediately filed.

Drivers stayed at the scene, and police reported no immediate charges

The official record identifies the person killed as the 26-year-old driver and sole occupant of the moped. The Daily News reported that police were still trying to identify him the next day.

Police told the Daily News that a 42-year-old bus driver and a 41-year-old dump-truck driver remained at the scene. The paper reported that no criminal charges were immediately filed.
