A 44-year-old e-bike rider died after a van driver opened a door into his path on Broome Street and a box truck driver ran over him near Centre Street, police accounts said.

Police identified the rider as Georgios Smaragdis, 44, of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. The Daily News reported that he suffered severe head trauma and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died.
Friends and fans told the Daily News that Smaragdis was the electronic producer and musician known as Starcadian, a prominent figure in the synthwave scene who also worked as a visual effects artist.
Sources describe the parked Mercedes differently
The city crash record lists an e-bike rider, a westbound box truck driver and a parked 2020 Mercedes SUV. News accounts described the parked Mercedes as a van and said the box truck was a red delivery truck.

Drivers stayed as police investigated
The Daily News reported that the drivers of both the Mercedes and the box truck remained at the scene. amNewYork reported that no charges had been filed against the truck driver as of May 1 and that the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating.
