What We Know

At 7:58 a.m. on Aug. 6, 2025, a driver in a box truck hit and killed a pedestrian on Morgan Avenue in Brooklyn. The city crash record places the crash at Morgan Avenue and Maspeth Avenue and identifies the pedestrian as a 46-year-old man; reviewed articles, citing police, described the driver as 56 and placed the crash near Sharon Street or 342 Morgan Ave. Police said the driver remained at the scene and was not facing charges as of Aug. 11. The death renewed calls from the Make Morgan Safe campaign for a protected bike lane, crosswalks, daylighting and other changes on an avenue that mixes truck traffic with growing residential use.

A morning crash on Morgan Avenue

The city crash record says the crash happened at 7:58 a.m. on Aug. 6, 2025, on Morgan Avenue at Maspeth Avenue in Brooklyn. It involved a box truck, and one pedestrian was killed with no other injuries recorded.

A heavily used Morgan Avenue corridor

The official record lists Morgan Avenue at Maspeth Avenue. Streetsblog, Brooklyn Paper, Greenpointers and News 12 described the crash as near Sharon Street or 342 Morgan Ave, so the reviewed sources do not align on the exact cross street.

The pedestrian died at the scene

The city crash record identifies the pedestrian as a 46-year-old man. Brooklyn Paper reported that he suffered severe trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pedestrian's age appears differently across the available sources: Brooklyn Paper described the person killed as 56, while police-cited accounts in Streetsblog, Greenpointers and News 12 described the driver as 56.

Police said the driver remained at the scene. Brooklyn Paper reported that he was not facing charges as of Aug. 11, and News 12 reported that police had no reason to believe the crash was criminal.

Crosswalk and street-design issues became the focus

The official person record attributed a pedestrian error or confusion factor to the pedestrian. Streetsblog and Brooklyn Paper reported that police said the pedestrian crossed outside a marked crosswalk near Sharon Street, but both outlets noted that there is no east-west marked crosswalk at that location.

The official vehicle record says the truck driver was traveling south and going straight ahead before the crash. Reviewed articles did not report charges against the driver.

Advocates renewed Make Morgan Safe demands

After the death, street-safety advocates again urged the city to redesign Morgan Avenue. Streetsblog reported that advocates had been pushing for a protected bike lane and mid-block crossings where the pedestrian was hit, and Brooklyn Paper reported calls for crosswalks, daylighting and enforcement.

At an Aug. 8 vigil, Juan Serra of Friends of Cooper Park said locals had gathered repeatedly on Morgan Avenue and argued that a comprehensive redesign with a protected bike lane, crosswalks, daylighting and enforcement was needed.
