The crash happened by a Morris Heights driveway
News reports placed the crash on W. 174th Street near Macombs Road in Morris Heights, by a driveway or alleyway between buildings. The Daily News described the driveway as leading into a Bronx apartment building, while News12 reported that police searched an alleyway between two buildings.
Neighbors told News12 the block is dark at night and that sight lines at the driveway are difficult when drivers turn in.
Video accounts placed the woman on the ground near the driveway
The Daily News, citing surveillance video it reviewed, reported that the woman had been collecting cans and bottles from garbage at the curb before she sank to her knees and became motionless. A later clip showed her still at the edge of the driveway when the driver turned in.
News12 also reported that surveillance video showed the woman going through garbage bags before she lowered herself to the ground, and that the driver stopped briefly after the impact but did not get out. A neighbor, Dawn Harvin, told the Daily News she tried to get the driver's attention after seeing what happened.
Early accounts disagreed about her exact position
One early Gothamist report, citing police, said the woman was crossing 174th Street when she was hit. That differs from the Daily News and News12 accounts based on surveillance video, which placed her on the ground at or near the driveway entrance, and from the official person record, which described her as not at an intersection and not in the roadway.
Police were still searching for the driver
ABC7 and the New York Post reported that no arrests had been made as of Aug. 7. News12 said police asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
