Family and press reports identified the victim
Daily News and a News 12 family report identified the pedestrian as 20-year-old Brandon Jose De La Cruz; a later News 12 arrest report spelled his first name Brando. Relatives told News 12 he was on his way to the gym when he was hit.
At a vigil on the service road, Rommer Jose, identified as Brandon's uncle, told News 12, "Brandon was a good kid, full of life." His father, Medardo Jose, told the station he wanted justice.
Police made an arrest months later
Police said they arrested Enisman W. Jalloh, 22, in April 2026. News 12 reported he faced charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and tampering with evidence.
Daily News reported that Jalloh surrendered to police, was arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court, and was released after posting $10,000 bail. The paper also reported, citing police sources, that he got rid of the SUV after the crash in an attempt to throw police off his trail.
Neighbors described a service road shaped by highway traffic
After the crash, people near the vigil told News 12 that drivers come off the Cross Bronx Expressway too fast and that the ramp is not long enough for drivers to slow before the red light. News 12 reported seeing drivers pass the red light and stop in the crosswalk.
