Police said the driver fled after hitting a cyclist

Police said the driver of a black Dodge Durango was traveling south on Amsterdam Avenue around 9:45 p.m. when the driver hit a 32-year-old bicyclist near West 151st Street and Amsterdam Avenue, then left without stopping.

The Daily News reported that police said Erick Lamont Bowie was bicycling south and trying to maneuver around a double-parked car when the driver sideswiped him. Bowie was thrown from his bike, suffered severe head injuries, and died after medics took him to Harlem Hospital.

Erick Lamont Bowie was identified days later

The Daily News identified the cyclist as Erick Lamont Bowie, 32, and reported that he worked as a driver at Interfaith Medical Center and lived with his mother in the NYCHA Ingersoll Houses in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Tanya Bowe, identified by the Daily News as Bowie's mother, said, "I want this person caught. I want charges pressed against him. My son didn't deserve this. I want justice for my son."

The crash happened on Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights

Police placed the crash near West 151st Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights, in Upper Manhattan. Press accounts described both Bowie and the driver as traveling south on Amsterdam Avenue before the collision.

The Daily News reported that Bowie was trying to get around a double-parked car. Streetsblog reported that photos from the aftermath showed an unoccupied minivan parked illegally in the street's unprotected bike lane, while noting that NYPD's communications office did not mention the minivan's position in the bike lane.

Police continued to search for the Durango driver

ABC7 reported the day after the crash that no arrests had been made and police were searching for the driver of the Dodge Durango. FOX 5 reported that police urged anyone with information about the driver or the 2021 Dodge Durango to contact authorities.

By June 26, the Daily News reported that the driver had fled after the fatal collision and had not been arrested.
